www.coastaltrawler.com is dedicated to producing and sharing plans and experience for boats, yachts and vessels. Boat restoration, hull upper structure modification are also part of our job. The site goes beyond this definition by including anything which fits into broad category of "floating objects" with elegance, The visitor of this site will found cargo, boat, yacht, and tug pictures with some voyages around the world.
We provide Hull Plans and help designing either new ones and/or modify existing ones. Please contact "yacht.designer @ hotmail.com" (do not use spaces around @ ). The Hull Plans are provided starting at the price of a book for a simple hull. A plan consist mainly on "Frame Dimensions" using the metric system. They are positioned every 50cm. Vessel Plans 1
The site offers a wide choice of plans for Yacht, Boat and Vessel Hulls. Some of them are completed including upper structures as suggestion. Different combinations between a particular hull and a specific upper structure is possible. If you are interested about some different combination please use the email yacht.designer @ hotmail.com
The picture below is a screen shot of a general purpose rounded bilge "double ender" hull of 9.4m long by 3.3m. Most of the plans are based around easy to build multi or single chine hulls.

Vessel Restoring
Since the beginning of our activity two vessels has been modified (the 2nd one is still under process - Summer 2011). The first one was a Luxemotor Remedie and the second is a Small Harbour Tug Aurora
The modification process consist on choosing a nice looking hull, making plans for, cutting old plates and welding new ones. This is the basic definition. Of course, in practice there is a little more to do...

The "Dutch Luxemotor" modified as Live Aboard Vessel (19.5m X 4m).

Harbor Tug under modification (summer 2011)
(13.5m X 4m)
Yacht.Designer works on pictures, photos and plans -if they exist- to suggest modifications to any hull of your choice. For example, the tug in the picture above is on work (summer 2011). Including the Wheelhouse and the Engine Room structures has been removed. After that, the Main Engine was taken off to implement a Turbo DAF 575 - 160HP. A new Wheelhouse and an Aft Cabin where implemented. |

Software tools and PC environment
Main software tools used for this site at remote PC and hosting systems are :
- Rhino3D for vessel plans and drawings,
- Vue9 or Bryce for virtual pictures of landscapes,
- Joomla as CMS for the Internet site (remote server system).
Working in a such environment requires a powerful PC and Graphic Card for fast image rendering and two independent screens.
The list above would be incomplete without other pieces such as : Notepad++, Gimp, PaintNet, Blender, Office products (Excel, Word, Database, Studio14, 3DS Max, ...) |
Vessel Plans (how-to...)
The major software tool used to produce plans is Rhino3D. This is a easy to learn and yet powerful tool which quickly shows the hull shape in a 3D space.
An idea ? Go ahead and sketch the lines. Than, step after step Rhino3D will be a great tool to build up a complete set of plans.
The picture below shows a very easy to build, flat bottom hull. The hull (bottom part) is "generic" for two separate models. One is "Tug" looking leisure boat and the other one is "Dutch Luxemotor" looking boat. In every design, the two major criteria are always respected : "Simplicity" and "Aesthetics".

In a 2 screen PC system, one may open Rhino3D in one screen and place the "Tools" of Rhino on the 2nd. This combination leaves more room for main design area.
